August 25, 2018 - Jersey Shore/Long Island |
We really haven't had good flying weather this summer. I haven't been flying very much. So when this Saturday's weather was excellent for flying, I decided to take full advantage, planning an ambitious flight to Long Island, Block Island, Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket and Cape Cod. The RVs speed made such a trip possible in a single day. I took off around 8:30 and transited across the Delmarva pensinsula and South New Jersey to Atlantic City. Usually I fly around the east side of Atlantic City down low to stay outside of its Class C airspace. But today I did something different and flew above it at 3,500 feet. |
That's one of the great thing about flying. From a different altitude, its like seeing a place for the first time.
I never have really noticed before these three big casino-hotels that are inland; not on the beach. Harrahs it at the top, the Borgata on the left and Golden Nugget on the right.

Just after leaving Atlantic City, looking north up the Jersey coast.
Almost like art.
The complex on the left looks like a public place, but the other four look like private estates. Not bad!
I proceeded up the Jersey Shore then turned right (east) over the ocean to avoid the JFK International Airport airspace. New York City is visible in the distance. I will fly up the Long Island southern coast. I had made this same trip back in February 2012. Has it really been six years? Doesn't seem that long ago.

I flew up Long Island's south coast which is mostly big, sandy beaches. Every so often I would fly by huge parking lots for the beachgoers. This is Jones Beach State Park which the Jones Beach Theater on the right. Jones Beach furnishes one of the most popular summer recreational locations for the New York metropolitan area. It is the most popular and heavily visited beach on the East Coast, with an estimated six million visitors per year. (Hat tip to Wikipedia)
The Robert Moses causeway crosses Fire Island Inlet to Robert Moses State Park. Established as Fire Island State Park in 1908, the park is the oldest state park on Long Island. Its current name was given to honor Robert Moses, the influential mid-20th century urban planner and former president of the Long Island State Park Commission. (Hat tip to Wikipedia)

The western tip of Cupsogue Beach County Park; clearly a popular place to camp on the beach in an RV.
Some very nice beach houses.
More nice beach houses, although I don't like the archtecture on some of them. Am I now looking at part of "The Hamptons"?
This house is clearly "The Hamptons" worthy; but again, I don't like the architecture.
I like these, though. | ||||||
Wow, grass tennis courts with a lot of people playing on them. This is the private Meadow Club in Southampton Village.
Sand dunes! | ||||||
Approaching Montauk at the eastern tip of Long Island. Look how wooded it is. I thought Long Island was completely filled with standing room only!
Pretty good-sized cliffs near Montauk.
An old radar tower; probably a relic of the cold war days.

Montauk lighthouse. | ||||||
